This story continues though…Ī have an old Sony 505VE notebook that I was updating with Windows patches. Other people that read this site have commented that they’ve had the same experience with both iBooks and Powerbooks so I know it’s not just me. So how did I get to this point of blanketing that all of D-Link’s USB products suck? Well, it’s obvious that their Mac support is non-existence. The iBook is now plenty happy and using WiFi without an issue. I called back a third time before I said “fuck it” and bought an AirPort card on eBay. In fact, that version actually crashed quicker than the driver that was on the CD. Doubtful that it’s hardware right? Try the “same yet different” 1.00 driver that they have online – same results. I tried the hardware on the PC: there didn’t seem to be a problem there – it connected OK and seemed to be OK. So I did: I wiped the HD and reinstalled OS-X. When I told the tech that I had just formatted the iBook and put a small amount of software on it – translation: I didn’t have anything that should conflict with it – he suggested that I reinstall Jaguar and try again. I called back the next day and they told me that it must be my iBook that is causing the problem. After talking to them, they tell me that my hardware was defective and I should return it to the store when I told them I ordered it online, they told me to call back later and get an RMA number. I don’t mean ten minutes on hold I mean ten minutes just to get them to spell my name and address correctly. When I contacted customer service, it took ten minutes for them to collect my information. I took a look at the configuration and saw some other software badness there: problems entering a WEP, some strangeness when it stored the WEP key, and it would never connect using WEP, even if the key was 100% correct. I installed the driver on my Mac and plugged in the DWL-122: it crashed the iBook. I had purchased a used iBook and this seemed like it would be a low cost way to add a WiFi connection to it without having to pick up a pricy AirPort (and Mac only) card. This is a USB based adapter that is supposed to offer 802.11b (WiFi) connectivity to a PC or a Mac. One at a time, I guess: first lets look at the DWL-122. So I’ve been waiting a month for D-Link to step up their support on their DWL-122 WiFi/USB and they’ve failed miserably – in fact, while I’ve been waiting for a new driver from them, I’ve discovered that their DBT-120 Bluetooth/USB adapter sucks almost as much! This is especially true when dealing with a brand new/1.0 product. Pretty stupid of me, I know, but when dealing with a hardware vendor I do have an inexplicable large amount of patience when their products are defective. This Rant has been over a month in the “waiting” because I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt.
